Poetry Slam 2022
The Literary Magazine is hosting a Poetry Slam/Performance at lunch in the Black box on Thursday, April 28th.
What is a Poetry Slam? Simply put, it is an artistic performance/competition where people perform spoken word poetry before an audience. It originated in the 1980s in Chicago, Illinois, as a way to bring poetry back to the people. However, its roots in oral traditions go much further back.
There are now all sorts of competitions and formats, as well as simple performances (recently a Slam Poet won the popular international talent show America's Got Talent). Today, slam poetry is considered an artistic movement as well as a genre of poetry and spoken word all its own.
Some poems are deeply emotional and vulnerable, personal experiences of the poets. Many tackle deep social issues, such as Black Lives Matter. Some are simple light-hearted performance pieces. Each one is a celebration of the art and its poet.
Whether you have a provocative piece or a humorous quip with good rhythm, please enter!
Whether you just want to have some fun or want your voice to be heard, enter, compete & have fun!
May the best poet prevail!
